Jamaican-born Canadian spinto tenor Paul Williamson is acclaimed for his rich, vibrant voice, combining dramatic power with lyrical warmth, refined musicality, and expressive nuance. Praised by critics as having a "startlingly rich voice" (Edmonton Journal), a "very pleasing tenor with Italianate colour, lovely phrasing and... lots of power when needed" (Opera Canada), and celebrated for his "ecstatic moments" in performance (The Globe and Mail), he is equally at home in the Italian, German, Russian, and contemporary operatic repertoire.
Paul holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from Houghton University, New York, a Master of Fine Arts in Opera Performance and Voice Pedagogy from the Glinka Conservatoire of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, and Artist Diplomas from the University of Manitoba and the Opera School at the University of Toronto.
His operatic repertoire includes leading roles such as Manrico (Il trovatore), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), Alfredo (Die Fledermaus), Aegisthe (Elektra), and Beppe (Pagliacci), together with appearances as the Scrivener in Khovanshchina and in numerous contemporary Canadian operas. He has performed with companies including Opera York, Opera in Concert, Southern Ontario Lyric Opera, Powerhouse Opera, Tapestry Opera, and Obsidian Theatre.
An accomplished concert soloist, Paul made his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Festival Orchestra as tenor soloist in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and returned to perform Mozart's Requiem and Beethoven's Choral Fantasia. He has also championed new Canadian works, creating memorable performances in Dean Burry's The Bells of Baddeck, David Bontemps' La Flambeau, and Ian Cusson's Of the Sea.
In 2024, Paul was called upon at short notice to step into the role of Alfredo in Opera York's production of Die Fledermaus, demonstrating the artistry, professionalism, and versatility that have become hallmarks of his career.
